★★『デヴィッドソン夫人の "the shape of the tree"』

winter morning
without leaf or flower

（冬の朝　葉も花もない　木のかたち）

私にとってデヴィッドソン夫人の "the shape of the tree" は単なる自然描写の句ではありません。

夏の緑に覆われた木々では、鮮やかな緑に目を奪われて「木のかたち」は見えません。高価な衣装や美しい化粧のためにその人を見ることができないという経験に繋がるように思えます。肩書きや経歴で影響を受けて「その人」を見誤ることもかなり多いのではないでしょうか。"without leaf or flower" の時に、初めて「その人」が見えてくるのでは無いでしょうか。

your mother. I was shocked.

母逝きぬ　幽かに落ちる滝の音

ローラ・ターナさん、私の友人のマイケル・ボードが、あなたの
お母さんの亡くなったことを知らせてくれました。ショックでした。

I wrote this haiku twenty five years ago when my mother died.
Agnes read this and wrote to me that she would like someone
to hear the sound from a distant waterfall at the time of her death.

この俳句を、私は２５年前に母が亡くなったときに書きました。
あなたのお母さんのアグネスは、この句を読んだ後、私に手紙を
呉れました。「私が亡くなったときにも、遠くの滝の音を聞いて
くれる人がいて欲しい。」

Now I'm hearing the sound from a remote place, with a deep sense
of gratitude for what she had taught me.

夫婦とグレース聖堂で母のためにお祈りをいたします。祭壇の花も
捧げられるでしょう。しかし、私は滝の音を耳にしていることと
思います。

In sorting through the last boxes of letters, separating haiku colleagues from others, I've come across your name and now understand why Mama kept in touch with you so often.

Laura Davidson, L.A.'s daughter was at the meeting. The entire
meeting was a kind of tribute to Agnes' work and life. Everyone
there read something she wrote.

アグネスの娘のローラ・デビッドソンが集まりに出席していました。
集まりは全てアグネスの業績と生涯への賛辞といったものでした。
出席者は誰もがアグネスの作品を朗読しました。

Laura read an email of yours including a haiku that you wrote and
one of L.A.'s. It was a touching event. I thought you'd like to
know that you were included.
